One night in Bangkok… and you’ll pay for it in the morning.

18 Jan

When it comes to partying, there are few places on earth that do it as well as Thailand. If you pass anywhere through this country, chances are you’ll have some wild nights followed by rough mornings.

Luckily, Thailand is home to one of the greatest hangover-treating foods ever created: banana pancakes.

These are rotis stuffed with bananas and covered in sweetened condensed milk or chocolate sauce. They combine two of the best things to eat when you’re hung over:

1.) They’ve got the comfort of a greasy and starchy snack.

2.) They have bananas which are rich in potassium, one of the key nutrients you need to to replenish in order to feel better.

So if you wake up in Thailand feeling like death, force yourself to get out of bed and go find the nearest pancake cart.

Rough Night in Bali?

21 Dec

So you drank too much Bintang last night and now you feel like death? First, why would you do that? Bintang is possibly the most foul alcoholic beverage known to man. It makes Schiltz malt liquor seem like Chimay white. But you did drink the Bintang. And now you’ve learned your lesson.

Not to worry, there is a way to salvage your day: Ginseng Coffee.

This awesome elixir is just the sugary, caffeinated jolt that you need to get back on your feet and ready to make the same mistakes all over again tonight. Cheers.

Hungover in Bosnia

4 Dec

True story: not to long ago I visited Sarajevo for the second time. The day we arrived was kind of rainy and unpleasant, so naturally we headed to a bar to keep dry. Ten hours, three bars, and countless beers later we climbed into our bunk beds, and woke up the next morning in a world of pain.

Not to worry though- I can say with some authority that Sarajevo is one of the best places to be hung over in the entire world. The reason: BOREK.

If you’ve never had borek you are living an incomplete life. This savory pastry consists of rolled phyllo dough stuffed with cheese, spinach, potatoes, or meat. It may be a Turkish dish, but the Bosnians do it the best, they cook it over charcoal rather than in a commercial oven, which gives it a completely different flavor and consistency.

There’s no amount of alcohol consumption that can’t be countered by a plate of charcoal cooked cheese borek drizzeled in yogurt sauce and accompanied by a turkish coffee. In under an hour this breakfast transformed me from the walking dead to a functional human being.

Now will some ambitious Bosnian please start a global borek franchise so that every bad morning can be resolved this easily.

Had too much to drink in Hong Kong?

2 Dec

So maybe you started the night out with a booze cruise in Victoria Harbor, and then took the party over to Wan Chai.  Now it’s the morning after and you’re paying the price. Look on the bright side, it’s a great opportunity to try out some Chinese hangover cures – let’s say in the form of tea.

First: Ku Ding Tea  (also known as Fuding, Chading or Galou tea) – This tea supposedly removes toxins, reduces inflammation, and eases headaches.  Full disclosure – it tastes awful. But if you’re really in a bad place it’s worth a shot. No one wants to waste a day in Hong Kong hiding in bed.

Second: Pu’er Tea This dark tea supposedly has weight-loss, anti-aging, and hangover curing abilities. Sounds too good to be true, but it never hurts to try.

Third: Ginseng Tea Like coffee, ginseng will give you a boost of energy to help you push through your rough morning and get on with your day. Unlike coffee, Ginseng won’t dehydrate you and slow your recovery process.

So after you’ve ingested enough tea to drown an elephant, maybe you’re feeling a bit better. Or maybe you’re not. If the latter happens to be the case, get your sorry ass over to Soho as fast as possible to cure your hang over the old fashioned way: with a big, greasy American or English breakfast.
